Japanese fans are the summer accessories par excellence. There are two types: Uchiwa and Sensu. The Uchiwa is the older of the two and originates from China, the Sensu is the foldable, modern and easy to carry version. It appears in the Heian period (794-1185) and is constructed from bamboo sticks and Washi paper. For women, they are decorated with delicate depictions of sakura petals, flowers and butterflies. For men, on the other hand, drawings of animals, plants, carp and bamboo. They are produced in paper, silk or synthetic fabric, with bamboo wood slats.
