Kokeshi

Kokeshi (こ け し) are a type of traditional Japanese doll, originating from the Tohoku region. Made by hand in wood, they have a simple cylindrical bust and a large spherical head, with a few stylized lines to define the characters of the face. A feature of Kokeshi dolls is the lack of arms and legs. At the beginning of the twentieth century they became so famous that in Russia they were taken as a model by the inventor of the first matryoshka. In addition to adorning Japanese homes, they are considered a good omen against bad luck and considered a fine collector's item to give to very special people.
